Written by Paul Clough

Undoubtedly one of the most beautifully scenic places in the United Kingdom with an abundance of wildlife habitats and steeped in culture and heritage; the Yorkshire Dales National Park is the perfect spot to choose for a walking holiday.

Covering roughly 680 square miles then there's little wonder why there are many different walking trails in the area with different types of terrain making for routes that provide everything from a challenge to a nice stroll. Due to the vast area that covers part of the Pennines in the North Yorkshire and Cumbria counties there are many walks so it's hard to choose certain routes over others as different people love them for varying reasons but if you are unsure where to start, or which ones to pick here are a some routes that are definitely must see.

The Three Yorkshire Peaks Walk

If you want a challenge and spectacular views then this walk is certainly for you; at 24.5 miles long over the three peaks of Pen-y-Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough the tradition is to do the whole route in less than twelve hours and if you're a fell or trail runner then the target is 2.5 but you can do each peak separately as well if you want. The trail is well marked and there are maps and guides to help you along if you need but you can enjoy stunning views of the surrounding landscapes all the way.

The James Herriot Way

Named after the author James Herriot, this walk is also quite a challenge at 52 miles and it will take on average four days so it's certainly not to be walked all in one go if you're not used to it. It gives you the best natural tour of the Dales with captivating views of open moorland, the valleys and takes you through certain parts of local areas of interest like Bolton Castle but also takes you up Great Shunner Fell which belongs to the Pennines so it's best to make sure you take a map and compass along with you.

Aysgarth Falls

This walk is better suited to all the family as it gives you a gentler walk through one of the Yorkshire Dales most popular attractions the Aysgarth Falls. The route goes through serene woodlands and pasture fields that you can enjoy at an easy pace to take in the local flora and fauna before arriving at the Low, Middle and High Forces. These are the triple flights of waterfalls that compose of the Aysgarth Falls that will surely capture the entire family's imagination as it is a true place of beauty.

Be sure to check out these walks in the Yorkshire Dales National Park and as many of the others as sounds appealing as you won't be disappointed whichever of the spectacular routes and trails you choose to explore and no matter where you are planning on walking this summer you can find a host of walking & outdoor equipment from Nightgear UK.
